Wii Internet Connection guide - a must read for those with connection problems!
Hello everybody, this guide is the popular guide made by me that I have posted on other forums to help those who just can't seem to connect to the Wii successfully. Being this a Wii forum, I thought this would be appropriate.
This is a problem most people are facing with their Wii, it's just not connecting or losing connection too easily. Sometimes the problem is that it's just too slow, and the broadband that you have isn't making it any faster. Here's some tips to get your Wii back to surfin'.
1 and foremost: GET YOUR WEP CODE! The WEP code is the code that your wireless router may be secured by to prevent others (like neighbors) to mooch off of your internet broadcasting. For most routers, the WEP code is found on the bottom near the bar code and is in between brackets. Not all wireless routers have a WEP code.
2: Change the channel! You may not know this, but all wireless routers broadcasts on certain channels. These channels support different Ghertz frequencies and help different devices. It's complicated to get into the settings of your router, but if you go to http://www.nintendo.com/support then they can help you out just a little bit.
3: Clear the way! Your router wants to be like you: in an open space, not crammed in the corner. Put your wireless router high up on a shelf or a cabinet, and give it some room. Make sure that surface your placing it on isn't metal either, or it'll just defeat the purpose.
4: Down with 2.4s! 2.4Ghertz wireless phones are a wireless router's worst enemy. As soon as possible, try to get a 5.8Ghertz phone if you don't already. Make sure there are also no metal objects, Microwaves, Cell phones, Cars, or radioactive material between the wireless router and the Wii. Walls don't count.
5: Can I have a USB Wireless Adapter? There are some of you out there who don't own a wireless router, that's perfectly ok, but you still don't really have a way to connect your Wii to the internet. Have no fear, there is Nintendo's USB Wireless Adapter. It's pretty much a wireless router, but only for Nintendo products. What's even better? It justs plugs into your USB port on your computer! You can find one of these at a local convenience store, electronics store, or on the Nintendo Shop website.
6: The alternatives. The Wii is capable of supporting a wired USB cord connection, but you can find a LAN converter at any store you can get a USB Wireless Adapter, so if you're against wireless, there is an answer.
I hope this guide can help you out in the effort to connect your Wii to the net if you can't. I will update this as needed as well.

RE: Wii Internet Connection guide - a must read for those with connection problems!
I have un question, what's the difference b/t router and connecter? I think I know, but I'm not sure. And:
Wireless Routers/Gateways provided by Internet Service Providers (such as Comcast, Time Warner, Road Runner, Charter, etc.):
The routers listed below are provided to customers by their Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Due to the way the Wii console interacts with these routers' firewalls (sometimes called an SPI firewall), it may not be able to connect online, even when using the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector or the Wii LAN Adapter. If you are able to log in and disable the router's firewall (you may need to get a "super user" password from your ISP), you may be able to get the Wii console connected online. If you use an ISP that prevents the firewall or SPI firewall setting from being adjusted, or if you prefer not to adjust the router's firewall, there is a system update that may resolve the console's ability to connect with Nintendo's servers, enabling the use of some online features.
Please note that not all online features of the Wii console are updated with this system update. Access to the News, Weather and Everybody Votes channels, as well as any channels that utilize the WiiConnect24 feature, may be unaccessible or have limited function with this update. A future Wii console system update is in development that will enable the use of all of the Wii console's online features. Please check back for more information.
To download the system update to your Wii console, you will need to successfully connect your Wii console online. If your current connection through your ISP-provided router is preventing a connection, you will need to find an alternative online connection, such as taking your Wii console to a friend's house where there is a compatible internet connection. (If this option is not available to you, link here for information on other options.) Once you have connected the Wii console online, the system update will download and install. With this update, you should be able to download any future updates with your own internet connection. If after performing this update you are still experiencing problems, visit http://support.nintendo.com for further assistance.

If they have a router, why need a nintendo USB connecter? :confused1:

RE: Wii Internet Connection guide - a must read for those with connection problems!
A router is to split the connection of an ethernet WAN cable (the internet) allowing multiple users to be able to use the connection at the same time, and also creating a personal LAN network.
A USB connector just converts an ethernet cable to a USB cable to allow you to plug your wii to the internet.
Depending on you setup you may need a router and a usb connector[Non-WiFi Router], or just a usb connector[if you don't mind your computer not having any internet for a while], or just a router[if it has WiFi].
I recommend using a WiFi router and connect your wii wirelessly to your WiFi signal. It's easy, no wires, and no hassle afterwards.

I like my connector too. The only problem I have with it is when I first put it in the comp. after a while it takes forever to set it back up.

In what conditions would you need a router and a connecter?
